Kokomo is one of Bill’s closest friends who happens to also be a Border Collie. Kokomo formed and immediate bond with Bill back in 2002 when she was just a pup. Their clandestine lifelong friendship began one day over a coffee and a cigarette at a local coffee shop that she use to frequent. This relationship later transformed into becoming a friendship and business partnership with her owner Sara Troy.
Over the years they have spent many hours and more than 10,000 miles walking and enjoying each others company. Bill attributes that he is alive today due to her wholehearted love, encouragement and support. You see Bill back in the summer of 2011 broke his back due to seizure caused his Parkinson’s Disease. During Bill’s recovery and healing process Kokomo was always by his side. No matter what time of day or night, or what type of weather, whenever Bill went for one of his walks their she was by his side, Sometimes running ahead of him pushing him to go faster. Other times walking slowly to prevent Bill from getting hurt. Other times walking for hours pushing Bill to his physical and pain limits. Always on the alert to to protect Bill when strangers approached. During this 18 month period of time they would walk up to 5 miles everyday! Then on the Easter weekend in 2013 a few minutes after one of Bill’s walk’s he had come home frustrated and pissed off about that pack of progress he was making in healing himself when all of a sudden his seizures stopped and he has not had one since that day!
Kokomo is now fourteen and a half years old and her life has begun to wind down. She has lost her hearing, her her old bones and muscles don’t work like they use to, yet she always has a twinkle in her eyes, a smile on her face and a heart over flowing with love. She truly is one man’s best friend. A friend who always be celebrated, appreciated, and eternally loved when she finally departs on her next great adventure in life…
How nick name “Smok’n DAWG” came about as a tribute to Kokomo, who ever since she was a young puppy has chased and jumped through smoke rings. Over the years she became know as the Smoking Dog. Back in 2012 when Bill was dealing with overcoming a few major physical and health challenges he got back into electronic music and was trying to come up with a name for a URL for a website he was creating when the name Smok’n DAWG popped into his head. The website was going to be a place where here could share his stories and his passion for digital music.
The meaning behind this name was derived from the word smoking, which is used to describe something as being both “Hot” and “Cool” in the sense of being hip or skillful, and the word “DAWG” which means friend. In particular case the word DAWG is also being used as an acronym for “Digital Audio Workstation Guru” So when you put it all together you get…
“The hip skillful friend and “Digital Audio Workstation Guru”
This story has yet another profound twist to it. Bill has lived in the company of dogs his entire life. If you have read Bill’s bio page (Meet the Smok’n DAWG…) on this website you will read the following quote…
”I am a humble man who embarked on a life long journey with god at my side. Guiding me on how to live life with purpose, meaning and dignity by serving the betterment of humanity.”
As you know Bill does not consider himself to be a religious or spiritual person so the use of the word god creates an ambiguity as is goes against his beliefs. Or is this just another one of Bill’s play’s on word that are left for us to try and figure out. So we asked him to explain…
Bill actually began to chuckle when we asked him. Yes, we were right, there is a very profound meaning behind choosing the word god. As bill put it god is merely a reflection of the word dog. So if you rewrite the quote using “my dog” instead of “god” you get…
”I am a humble man who embarked on a life long journey with my dog at my side. Guiding me on how to live life with purpose, meaning and dignity by serving the betterment of humanity.”
Which now become a true factual statement that has been born out in his life and also proves that
“A dog really is man’s best friend!”
